Getting back to nature: A beautiful swimming environment like no other, created by Acrefield
Acrefield complete chemical and filter free swimming ponds
Date: May 2019
PROJECT OBJECTIVE
To create a natural pond environment which is inviting to swim in, without the use of chemicals.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
We recently completed a swimming pond for a client without the use of chemicals. The pond was excavated and then lined with a protective geotextile and impermeable membrane. A depression around the perimeter of the pond was excavated and this was lined and filled with gravel. This gravel was then planted with reeds to form a reed bed in which the pond water can recirculate through. As the reeds grow they absorb nutrients removing them from the pond water which helps prevent suspended algae. The reed bed will also help trap suspended solids and general debris.
An access walkway was also added using a webbing system filled with cobbles.
PRODUCTS INVOLVED
The pond was lined with 300g needle punched geotextile and a 1mm LLDPE membrane. The reed bed edge was separated from the main swimming pool using a pre-established coir rolls. The access walkway was created using a 150mm deep webbing membrane. A water pump, UV sterilisers and aquatic plant plugs were also used for this project.
OUTCOME
Attractive swimming pond created for the client for their own private use.
BENEFITS
The use of reed beds minimises the potential of Algal blooms and allows recirculation of the water thus helping to provide clear water and making it enticing for swimmers.
